How to add Header Images to your WordPress? Step-by-step Tutorial!

When you finally decide to get yourself a WordPress blog, there are still elements that seem to confuse the users. One of such topic is adding a header image to your WordPress. And because we have often seen users struggling with this, today in our article, we will be dwelling on the topic of how to add header images on WordPress!

Before we get into the topic, let’s get a brief view of WordPress Image header. Headers have obviously come a long way considering the options WordPress now provide. Not only can you add Images to the header, but you now also have the choice to create rotating header images. While most themes come with inbuilt header options, you can also think out-of-the-box and add random images or rotating headers. How To Add WordPress Header Images?

Most WordPress themes come with custom header support that means that the theme that you have chosen comes with a feature that allows you to add random header images to your site! So now, let’s get on with the process of How to Add WordPress Header Images?  Adding Header images is a simple task and you can do it in two ways. For one, you can simply add the header and customize it using the inbuilt WordPress Theme Customizer. And two, you can use a WordPress plugin.

Now that I have named the two processes, lat’s get into the details of each process!

Method 1: Add WordPress Header Images using Theme Customizer!

This is an easy method that uses the Theme Customizer option and is flexible enough for anyone to easily use. If you are a beginner to WordPress, then this is the method that we probably recommend. Why? Simply because of the easy aspect of this method as to understanding and following the steps.

First, redirect to WordPress Theme Customizer through Appearance and then Customize. Once you are redirected to the page, you can then access the option by clicking on Header option. Or the option can also be named- Header Media or Header Images according to your theme.

You will then see the option to add media to the newly accessed Header menu. Click on Add new Image so that you can upload the header image of your choice!

A new window will then open which will allow you to add a new image. Once you are done uploading and cropping, the newly added image will appear as a new WordPress header image on your site!

If you want to randomize your header images, follow the same process and upload some more images you want as a header! After uploading, you will then see the images under the newly uploaded. Under it, you can also access the option for Randomize your uploaded headers. Click on it and you are done!

Method 2: Add WordPress Header Image using Plugin

Now that you know how to add custom header images using the Theme Customizer, let’s talk about the process of adding custom Header Image using a WordPress plugin. Here for this purpose, we will be using the plugin WP Display Header.

After activating the plugin, you will now be able to add a header in a more controlled manner. Whenever you edit a post or simply create a new one, you will notice a newly added meta-box labeled Header. From there, you can control and choose the header images that you have uploaded before as a Header image.

You will also have the option to change header image for your categories or tag archive pages. For this, simply go to Posts and then on Categories. Click edit on the one that you want to make changes. You will see a newly added header section similar to the one below the post section! Follow the same process when choosing the image or randomizing. Be sure to save by clicking on Update!
